Rayma C Page: From B to
A
Rayma C. Page Elementary's grade rose from a B
to an A in the San Carlos
Park school's second year.
Principal Susan Caputo attributes much of that success to grouping
children
last fall based on their performance in reading.
"If they're in an upper grade and they need that phonetic instruction,
we
have a primary teacher who is able to give it to them," she said.
"We would look at the students' assessments and we would then decide
what
they need from there.
"Our grade-level teachers meet and they work together as a team."
The pupils also took mock standardized tests every month.
"That got them into the test mode," Caputo said. "When tests came, it
wasn't
as fearful, as intimidating a situation."
Samia Abed, whose twin boys just finished fifth grade at Page, was
pleased.
"It's just a great school all around. The teachers are great and the
staff
in the office are great," she said. "There's still a lot of diversity
which
I really love because it reminds me of when my kids went to school in
Miami."
Her son, Yousef Abed, 10, liked Page Elementary, too. "They make you
work
hard, but they make it fun."
